Michael has been named the winner of the Columbia Orchestra's 2013 American Composer Competition for his work Scène et Pas de deux. As part of the prize, the piece will be presented on the orchestra's Feb. 1 & 2, 2014 concerts in Columbia, MD.
American Public Media recently invited Michael and saxophonist Jonathan Wintringham to appear on its renowned "Performance Today" radio program, which reaches over 1.3 million weekly listeners. Live studio performances of Walimai and works by Grieg, Piazzolla, and Robert Bariller will be broadcast by more than 260 stations nationwide on Nov. 20-22, 2013.
The Philadelphia Orchestra Association has commissioned Michael to compose a second work for its educational outreach concert series, Sound All Around. Their first commission, The Seahorse and the Crab, was taken up by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra last season in an expanded version for full orchestra.
